Happy New Year January 2009 Fishing Reports and Updates
1/17..... Let me first start off by saying Happy New Year! I hope that your Holidays were as good as mine....My only complaint by far was that Christmas was over before it ever felt like it started and now here it is the middle of January and I'm not sure what happened to December yet....Let me see if I can show you with pictures a few of the things you might have missed...
What a way to welcome in the New Year....Surf City's Dolphin Dip.......For those of you who weren't around....it really was COLD that day....those who actually dipped didn't dip long....but there was a decent turn out.....
Just someone .....cant really say who.... But I caught them during the daylight hours looks like he .....could be trout fishing??....
Speaking of trout fishing....looks like there's nothing really to it.... Even Makayla was catching them on her pink rod no less.... Unfortunately most have been to small to actually keep....
Thursday the 15th there was an unusual number of menhaden running though the water.....
I tried to capture on film what it was we were seeing....which wasn't easy to do.....for those of you who need a little help....the darker blues/purple coloring on the first and third pictures... are the bait fish running through the water ....this constant stream of fish ran for close to 2hrs......the line of fish stretched up the beach in both directions as you can see for what looks to be for miles.....the second picture was just a sampling of all the pelicans and seagull's that were feeding on the bait....the birds were diving into the water ......it looked like bombs exploding the way they were falling from the sky.....and the last picture is a little better picture so you can kinda see how thick the fish really were.....The water which you cant see ....really was quite clear that day and you could see the bottom and all the short piling along side of the pier.....
As you can see there have been a few things going on this winter.....just not alot of fish to brag about....The past couple of days the weather has been frigid...few have ventured out....the weekends you can usually find a few more fellow fisherman around....so if the weather is nice come on out and say hello....Its time to start getting the pier back in shape...it will be time to open again before you know it....Our actual re-open date is scheduled for Friday March 27th....Keep checking the computer for other updates....If you need to reach me or one of the others you can always drop us and email...we will be glad to get back to you.... See you in the Spring....
January 20.....Let it Snow....Let it Snow ....Let it Snow...Not many people out but thought you might like to see it anyway...incase you missed it.....enjoy....
Shots of the Pier covered in snow.... The Beach dusted in snow.... A little different shot ....the bridge with snow.....
I only took out the camera today so not really sure if the fish were biting or not....Guess you are just gonna have to come out and see for your self....
February 13.....So much is happening here at the pier....lots of activity and cleaning up going on....the kitchen and bathrooms both have gotten a fresh coat of paint....soon the floor should be getting its fresh new look....not much going on out on the pier ....not many people even coming out to fish.....just didn't want you to think I had forgotten you.....just not much to report.....
March 9th.....Someone has turned up the heat....wasn't it snowing last week?....The weekend was wonderful and hot....there were people everywhere and in bathing suits ....some even in the water!!!.....Which by the way is only around about 51 degrees.....I did hear of a few Va. Mullet caught on Saturday and they were big ones too......Not much has been going on fishing wise....not many people have been coming out to fish....then again it has been cold......maybe we will start to see some changes with the warmer days.....
The pier house is finally starting to come together.....some stock has started to come in ....the grill, floors, and bathrooms have been painted which I think I have already told you about....We have added some flower boxes in and around the pier.....The parking lot has been cleaned up and we found a few more parking spaces out there. The town has fixed the flooding down on the corner from us and has done some regraveling in our parking lot which has also helped to make us look better....There have just been lots of little changes going on....I have had lots of volunteers coming out to lend a hand....and a BIG THANK YOU to each one of them....I think your gonna like the changes happening around here....
Now remember the pier will reopen on Friday, March 27th at 6am and the first Va. Mullet caught will win the 2009 Season Fishing Pass.....come on out and try your luck....someone is going to have to catch it might as well be you.....don't be late....See you when you get here....
March 17th.....Ok a week and a half to go.....No one seems to be fishing again....but the nasty weather is back and so is the rain.....I guess we only have our fair weather fisherman in town....so I cant give you a fishing report....guess you are just going to have to come down and check it out for yourself.....
March 26th......TOMORROW 6 AM don't be late....here's a sample of what was caught today...... SEE YOU IN THE MORNING!!!
March 29th.....I'm slow I know.....We/me bought a new camera the other night and had to get the software downloaded so I could up load the pictures here....kinda had to figure it out too....I know excuses excuses......
But we opened on time on Friday.....the weather was nice most of the day....even had a good crowd to show up....it took them 45 mins to catch the first mullet. Lots of people keeping their eye on Allen who showed up to defend his winning streak but it wasn't to be this year.....Daniel Lee was the first to catch and bring me the winning Va. Mullet.
We quickly took his picture and urged him to release the little fellow to grow up. We did see some small mullet and small spots and a small bluefish that day....with lots of skates and sharks mixed in....now on Saturday the weather was again nice and the mullet were doing a much better job of cooperating with the fisherman....Tim Willard managed to snag a dozen for himself and another fisherman Ricky took home five....
Now they did their best before noon yesterday....Through out the day there were still the same skates and sharks mixed in but I was hearing of a few blowfish also.....I hear tell from a few fisherman this morning that they caught some croakers, mullet and sharks last night....haven't seen the fish yet though....this morning things are a little wet.....and fisherman are a little slow to stir.....all in all it hasn't been a bad weekend....We are glad to have you all back and look forward to another exciting year.....See ya'll soon
** Did everyone see the front page of the Star News on Saturday.....There was a picture of the pier on the front page and you can click here go online to their website to see the article and more pictures of us....**
April 5th...We have been open a week now and had a chance to see alot of familiar faces that we have been missing all winter.....next weekend I expect to see a few more....the weather has been a hit a miss this past week....for the most part nice if you can stay out of the wind....the tempatures have been warm...nights a little cooler.....As for fishing there have been a few mullet during the daytime hours and lots of mullet after dark.....Paul left out of here one night with over 30 mullet and by the sounds of things he wasn't the only one.....looks like if your wanting mullet best be planning a trip this way one evening and getting you some....
April 19th.....You can always call and find out what's biting you know....ok for the most part we have been catching mullet after dark.....
Look who I caught out here fishing.....some nights have been better than others ....and if the wind is coming from the south west we are probably doing better.....the black drum and bluefish are starting to show up more often .....the weekend was good....there was a good crowd to show up and the weather was nice....the mullet are biting pretty good tonight....
** Attention Season Pass holders the gifts have arrived please stop by the pier house and pick up your gift....**
April 22nd......What's up with this wind??? After 3 days of this I have just about had enough....the only good thing about it is the fish (va. mullet) are biting....I just don't have that many people out here wanting to fish....and me with my short attention span....its hard to hang out waiting for the fisherman to show up....
Some fisherman are doing great others well you know how it goes....there are also plenty of sharks and skates around......blues have started putting in an appearance and we have landed some really nice black drums from the surf area.....
The weekend looks to be wonderful in the 80's probably no fish....isn't that how it usually works....so for all my fair weather fisherman come on out and enjoy the weekend with me.....
April 26th .....Spanish showed up well on Saturday along with the blues toward the afternoon the va. mullet were biting again....and well .....after dark it was a hit and miss depending on who you spoke with.....sounds like the mullet were still biting .....just not all that well.....as for today well the spanish and blues were back..... but nothing like the day before .....the water is muddier today than it was yesterday that may be part of it.....as for the mullet they have been doing decent this afternoon I even weighted in for Glenn that was 1.15 lbs and he told me that he had a couple more of them .....so as you can see the weekend hasn't been bad the weather has been wonderful and hot .....did I say hot and sunny .....saw alot of RED bodies that use to be white wonder if someone should have reminded them about sunscreen.....have to go easy on those first trips out dont'cha know......
